The fight against financial crime: a strategic imperative for banking resilience in Africa

The fight against financial crime is clearly no longer a secondary subject. It has become a central issue for the solidity and credibility of African banking systems.

During the 2026 edition of the Africa Banking Forum in Kinshasa, this was felt from the very first exchanges. In an environment in full transformation, marked by digitalization and the rapid evolution of usages, compliance can no longer be perceived as a simple obligation. It now plays a key role in the construction of trust.

What emerges very concretely from the discussions is the extent to which risks are evolving fast. Between the development of digital payments, the sophistication of fraud schemes, and the increasingly cross-border dimension of flows, institutions must permanently adjust their reading of risk. It is no longer just about controlling, but about understanding and anticipating.

Technology obviously brings part of the answers. Detection tools, data exploitation, and real-time analyses have become indispensable. But we can clearly see that this is not enough. Without real coordination between actors, without effective exchanges between regulators and financial institutions, and without a certain harmonization of practices at the regional scale, the systems remain limited.

What is changing in depth is the place of compliance. It is no longer uniquely there to frame or constrain. It is becoming a true lever of performance and differentiation. The institutions that integrate it fully into their strategy will be those that inspire the most trust.

And beyond all that, there is an element that we sometimes forget but which remains fundamental: the human. The quality of a system depends above all on the teams, on their capacity to detect what does not appear coherent, to ask the right questions, to understand new schemes. This is where everything is decided.

Basically, fighting against financial crime is accepting to change posture. No longer only reacting, but anticipating. This is undoubtedly what will make the difference in the years to come.
